Million page view knol authors

eHowknol already has million page view.

A korean author will have million page views by end of this
month.

Presently Narayana Rao is having 600,000 page views and his monthly page views are 100,000. There another knol author from spanish language who is clocking around 50,000 page views per week or 200,000 page views per month. These figures are challenging other knol authors to increase their output as well as promotion to ramp up their page views. Good for knol that visible and interesting page view targets are there for many authors to aim for and achieve.

Centurion Knol Authors Are Charging

There are many centurion knol authors on the platform.

So far nobody highlighted them. A recent initiative to make a list of centurion knollers identified 67 of them so far. This is the figure in say 350 top viewed knol authors on the platform. It is around 20%. Knol platform may have around 30,000 knol authors. Therefore it is not difficult to find 1000 knol authors who wrote more than 100 knols already. An initiative to help these knol authors to improve their knols and have 100,000 page views for their knol portfolios can give 100 million page views for the knol platform from these 1000 centurion knollers itself.

Knol management and knol author should come together and start an initiative in this direction.

NEST on Knol

NEST (Never Ending Story) is the knol which has become an increasingly popular venue for publications including ones that look a lot like standard peer reviewed journals. More generally, a NEST starts as an embryonic paper. With iteration and with the help of co-author and reader suggestions, it incubates a mature manuscript. Unlike a blog, it is not just a snapshot of a narrative perspective in a sequence of snapshots, but a single integrated document.

We are using the knol as the infrastructure for our NESTs, we can hope that academic publishers will provide vehicles of similar functionality.

Blogger or Wikipedia - Which is more popular?

There is lot of hype around wikipedia especially in the context of wikipedia versus knol that blog were given a bad name. That is only a blog has become a derogatory sentence.

Many blogs are extremely useful not because they are diaries but because they were websites easily set up using blog platforms. Blog is now promoted as easy website and not a pesonal diary.

It is interesting to note that blogger is ahead on wikipedia in terms of popularity as per Alexa ranking. But statistics about blogger platform are not available as compared to wikipedia and many people may not know the popularity of specific blog posts.

If blogger is successful why knol will not be successful? Under normal logic knol will be succesful.

But will knol cannibalize blogger? Will knol get different types of persons as authors and different types persons as visitors and improve the performance of google? Still all over the world more and more houses are getting internet connections and market size may be expanding and that may go in the favor of knol like platforms. Knol may turnout to be big learning platform maintained by a number of individual authors competing with each other for visitors. The innovative, consumber savvy, and tenacious persons only will grow to become more enduring authors.

Regarding success of knol, I do not think there needs to be a logical doubt.

250,000 Knols to 1,000,000 knols

Knol platform has around 250,000 knols at the moment. My estimate is that the number will go up to 1,000,000 by end of the second year that is 31st July 2010. The million knol portfolio would also give one million page views per day and knol will become a top 100 website. The momentum is already there. Everyday new authors are signing up and new knols are appearing.

There are still many gaps in various subjects for writing knols. One can visit the knol to have an idea of some areas requiring knols.

Want to Know Who are Authors of Most Popular Knols

Visit

http://knol.google.com/k/narayana-rao-kvss/knol-authors-of-top-800-knols-having/2utb2lsm2k7a/1530#

The list presently has 65 authors of TOP viewed 800 knols. The list will have more authors.

Knol has many capable authors and it is on its way to success as an article website.

Knol - 25 Million Page Views

My estimate is that knol had 25 million page views for first full year of public operations.

I made one more estimate today for the top 800 knols. The page view figure comes to 8 million for the first year. Hence for all the knol articles combined 25 million seems to be a reasonable figure.

Page Views for Top 800 Knols
http://knol.google.com/k/narayana-rao-kvss/page-views-for-top-800-knols/2utb2lsm2k7a/1523#

The estimate of 25 million knols gives an average daily page views of around 0.5 to 0.6. Is it a good page view figure for knol? knol management can determine the answer from its experience of the blogger platform. I do not have any estimate. But I would not be surprised if blogger has 0.1 page views or even less than that for a blog post.

According to me knol page view number will reach one million a day during the second year of operations.

Knol for Classroom

Thoughts on How Blogging Can be Used in Classroom
Lenn

http://chromakeylenn.blogspot.com/2009/07/chroma-key-definitions.html

Lenn identified in the article how blogs help students in media studies.

Knols also serve similar purpose and one can leverage the ability of collaboration in case of a knol. All the alumni of the institute can be brought into the academic activities of the institute by asking all alumni to contribute to the various knols of the institute, faculty and current students. Such an invitation will be able to capture the interesting incidents in the real life experience of alumni one by one at a pace convenient to the alumni and provide that experience to current students and faculty to think over, understand and discuss the relevance of basic priciples and theories to real life issues.

SWOT Analysis of Knol

Knol is completing its first year public life. What are its strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths

Started by Google Which is a savvy player in Website business domain.
Technical competence of Google in software as well as in efficienty using hardware to deliver exceptional service to website visitors.
Knol has positioned itself a knowledge site committed to promote online learning (It has not given undue importance to advertising).

Weaknesses

* Late entry into the market with a well established market leader.
* No special technology innovation in the platform.
* Low key entry.
* Lack of a visible "knowledge expert team" that is guiding the roll out.
* Revenue model for authors (First year nobody made any significant revenue).

Opportunities

* Many institutes have not provided publishing opportunity to their faculty.
* Ph.d theses can be published on knol.
* School/College/Institute/Alumni Magazines can have knol versions.
* Management Development Course Modules can be hosted on knol.

Threats

* While negative publicity has subsided it may resurface as competitors feel if they cannot attack now, there is no chance in the future.

Comments welcome.

Negative publicity about knol has reduced. But still there are some who voice an opinion that knol has to be killed. They give examples of some poor quality articles as support for their argument.

When the platform is open to public and there is no editing from the platform, there will be wide variations in quality. Existence of some poor quality writing is not the criterion for closing a platform. The provision of quality articles is the reason for the survival and growth of the platform. Knol has developed a quality ranking and there are more than 1000 high quality articles on knol. There are thousands of five star and four star quality articles. There are thousands of article which got more than 500 page views. Even visitor number is more in line with the experience of similar article sites. Quantcast says that US visitors are around 170,000 per day. This number would give around 340,000 visitors for global and this figure is good considering that there are around 230,000 articles at the moment.

Many persons with specialist qualifications and experience are registering with knol as knol has positioned itself as serious article repository. Knol has great future as a knowledge base.

Knol as a teaching aid

Knol for dummies-writing a knol about

Health Issue - Bacteria decay - Rotten egg smell in well water
http://knol.google.com/k/mark-bowen/health-issue-bacteria-decay-rotten-egg/hq2vomqc6hij/1#

This site was a little different. The idea behind writing a knol is to educate other people about a specific topic or idea. This is pretty cool as a form of assessment. At the end of the lesson, students can write one about what they have learned.

Udi Manbers Initial Post on KNOL

Encouraging people to contribute knowledge

12/13/2007 06:01:00 PM
Posted by Udi Manber, VP Engineering

The web contains an enormous amount of information, and Google has helped to make that information more easily accessible by providing pretty good search facilities. But not everything is written nor is everything well organized to make it easily discoverable. There are millions of people who possess useful knowledge that they would love to share, and there are billions of people who can benefit from it. We believe that many do not share that knowledge today simply because it is not easy enough to do that. The challenge posed to us by Larry, Sergey and Eric was to find a way to help people share their knowledge. This is our main goal.

Earlier this week, we started inviting a selected group of people to try a new, free tool that we are calling "knol", which stands for a unit of knowledge. Our goal is to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it. The tool is still in development and this is just the first phase of testing. For now, using it is by invitation only. But we wanted to share with everyone the basic premises and goals behind this project.

The key idea behind the knol project is to highlight authors. Books have authors' names right on the cover, news articles have bylines, scientific articles always have authors -- but somehow the web evolved without a strong standard to keep authors names highlighted. We believe that knowing who wrote what will significantly help users make better use of web content. At the heart, a knol is just a web page; we use the word "knol" as the name of the project and as an instance of an article interchangeably. It is well-organized, nicely presented, and has a distinct look and feel, but it is still just a web page. Google will provide easy-to-use tools for writing, editing, and so on, and it will provide free hosting of the content. Writers only need to write; we'll do the rest.

A knol on a particular topic is meant to be the first thing someone who searches for this topic for the first time will want to read. The goal is for knols to cover all topics, from scientific concepts, to medical information, from geographical and historical, to entertainment, from product information, to how-to-fix-it instructions. Google will not serve as an editor in any way, and will not bless any content. All editorial responsibilities and control will rest with the authors. We hope that knols will include the opinions and points of view of the authors who will put their reputation on the line. Anyone will be free to write. For many topics, there will likely be competing knols on the same subject. Competition of ideas is a good thing.

Knols will include strong community tools. People will be able to submit comments, questions, edits, additional content, and so on. Anyone will be able to rate a knol or write a review of it. Knols will also include references and links to additional information. At the discretion of the author, a knol may include ads. If an author chooses to include ads, Google will provide the author with substantial revenue share from the proceeds of those ads.

Once testing is completed, participation in knols will be completely open, and we cannot expect that all of them will be of high quality. Our job in Search Quality will be to rank the knols appropriately when they appear in Google search results. We are quite experienced with ranking web pages, and we feel confident that we will be up to the challenge. We are very excited by the potential to substantially increase the dissemination of knowledge.

We do not want to build a walled garden of content; we want to disseminate it as widely as possible. Google will not ask for any exclusivity on any of this content and will make that content available to any other search engine.

As always, a picture is worth a thousands words, so an example of a knol is below (double-click on the image to see the page in full). The main content is real, and we encourage you to read it (you may sleep better afterwards!), but most of the meta-data -- like reviews, ratings, and comments -- are not real, because, of course, this has not been in the public eye as yet. Again, this is a preliminary version.

5,000,000 page views for a Knol Author in year. 5 million, right.

Today I am happy to see that weekly viewership of my knols has gone up to 4000. Of course Judge's weekly viewership is above 10,000. I am not really free to concentrate and write knols and my health is not also good at the moment. I shall have more focus from July 2009 and I am thinking I can plan for 1000 knols each having 5000 page views in the year. That will give 5,000,000 page views in year. 5 million, right. I think it is possible. 100,000 page views in a week.

Many other knollers will achieve similar targets and knol platform will move away from the worries of the survival of the platform in 2009-10.

I think knol admin should release knol page view and other statistics for the entire platform on daily basis or weekly basis. Some of the statistics can be:

Daily page views
Cumulative page views
Daily authors registered
Cumulative number of authors registered
Daily knols created
Cumulative number of knols created
Average page views per week for a knol badge quality knol
Average page views per week for a five star quality knol
Average page views per week for a four star quality knol
Average page views per week for a three star quality knol
Average page views per week for a two star quality knol
Average page views per week for a one star quality knol
Average page views per week for an unstarred knol
Average page views for an author
Average page views for an active author

Such a score card can give excitement, information and enables planning by knol writers.

One more of my suggestion is that blog search engine of google should search knol also along with blogs. Blogs are user generated content and knols are also user generated content on a different platform. Hence it makes sense for blog search engine to search knols also.

Knol for Dummies.com competition

I am excited to announce the Knol for Dummies.com competition. I'm particularly excited about this contest because I'm an avid fan of "For Dummies" books. Wrote Matt Ghering, Product Marketing Manager

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-to-become-dummiescom-author.html

I am also excited about the contest. As a blogger I saw on the blogger dash board that knol is open for public writing on 24th July 2008. Immediately, I entered the knol platform and started writing. The contest idea is an interesting one. Authors first of all have an urge to write. When they are offered ready audience for it they do get excited. Then some monetary incentives, they will be thrilled. On top of it, an opportunity for publication of the book.

I wish the contest all success.
